1st XI Captain becomes first girl at Cranleigh School to score cricket century

1st XI Captain, Georgia L., became the first Cranleigh School girl to score a cricket century at Cranleigh this week.

Georgia led Cranleigh to victory against Surrey Academy by scoring 111 for her team. An amazing achievement as it's the first year we have had cricket as a full time sport for girls in the Summer term.

Mr Gareth Pritchard, Cranleigh Cricket Coach, said: "It was great to see the girls out in the middle for the first time on Saturday. We have a really exciting and busy season ahead of us and it was brilliant to start with such a good victory against a good Surrey XI, particular credit must go to Georgia L, not just for her batting but her leadership throughout the game."

The first ever hundred scored by a pupil was William Edward Barton. He scored 131 against Cranleigh Village on May 17th 1876 in his final year at Cranleigh School. Within three years of leaving he emigrated to New Zealand where he played first-class cricket for Auckland.

Cranleigh has been a co-educational school for 40 years, and fully co-educational (with girls in all year groups) for 23 years. Cricket was introduced as a girls' main sport a few years ago and is increasingly popular.

Currently 20 girls do cricket full time and a further 19 take part in one session a week. We also have teams in the U12 National Cup, U15 Surrey Cup and U18 National Cup which all take place next week.
