A record year for senior school scholarship offers at Exeter Cathedral School
Posted on 17th Apr 2018 in School News, Music, Art, Sport, DramaThis year has seen an impressive number of scholarships and exhibitions for pupils at Exeter Cathedral School (ECS) with an incredible 47 prizes being awarded overall.
Year 8 pupils have accrued a number of Academic, Music, Art, Sport and Drama scholarships and prizes at prestigious independent senior schools. ECS is excited to announce that 73% of its Year 8 cohort will be leaving with a scholarship offer. Furthermore, 88% of pupils who sat for senior school scholarship examinations were successful in achieving an award.
With the appointment of Mr James Meeke MA (Oxon) in September 2016, the School has seen a considerable rise in the number of scholarships and prizes being accepted by Year 8 leavers. With 34 scholarship acceptances in 2017, itself a significant improvement from past years, this year’s results clearly display the academic provision and support on offer at ECS.
Head of Scholarships and Enrichment James Meeke said, ‘It has been another incredibly successful year in terms of awards, and it is really pleasing to see that our dedicated programme of scholarship preparation is paying dividends for our pupils.’
Notable pupil results include: Alex Bartle and Ayrton Rose for achieving top music scholarships to Blundell’s and Downside respectively; Ben Cornford who received the A V Hill award and top academic scholarship to Blundell’s; Ruth Burke for the Scholarship Prize (awarded to the top candidate at 13+) to Exeter School; Louisa Chambers for her Art Scholarship to Marlborough College; and finally Arianwen Ramrutten who achieved a total of seven scholarship offers overall!
ECS pupils were successful in achieving awards from a range of local and nationally recognised independent senior schools: Exeter School, Blundell’s, The Maynard, Wellington School, Queen’s College Taunton, King’s College Taunton, Taunton School, Truro School, Millfield, St Mary’s Calne, Downside, Wells Cathedral School and Marlborough College.
Headmaster James Featherstone added, ‘I am absolutely delighted that ECS pupils have done so well in their scholarship applications to their chosen Senior Schools for a second year running. This is a record-breaking year and I congratulate our senior pupils on what is a remarkable achievement. Their success is down to their own hard work and that of their specialist teachers, and the really first-rate provision which we are proud to offer through our Senior Enrichment Programme.’
ECS has been educating the children of Devon since the 12th century and continues to provide a solid academic and all-round education for its pupils.
