Adventure loving King’s Ely students learn abundance of new skills in Lake District

Bouldering, ridge walking and trail running were just some of the activities enjoyed by intrepid King’s Ely students during an adrenaline-fuelled expedition to the Lake District.

To say the 10-day expedition, which kicked off on the first Sunday of the summer holidays, was action-packed would be a slight understatement – with the group of King’s Ely Senior students also enjoying multi pitch mountain climbing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, plunge pool swimming and more.

The expedition was staged through the Ely Scheme, which offers boundless opportunities for students to explore and learn through outdoor education. While most independent schools have an outdoor pursuits programme, the Ely Scheme is both unique and central to the whole King’s Ely experience, as young people from Year 9 upwards are given tangible opportunities to push themselves to achieve beyond anything they ever thought possible.

The aim is to develop each individual student through outdoor education and adventurous activity, concentrating on eight major elements: personal skills; self-confidence; teamwork; leadership skills; social and environmental awareness; problem solving; ability to cope with difficult situations and healthy respect for nature and the outdoors.
