An exciting cross-curricular experience for all Northbourne Park School pupils
Posted on 24th Sep 2018 in School NewsChildren at Northbourne Park School had a rather unusual week when they swapped their classrooms for a Native American teepee.
Native American Indian teepees were the homes of the nomadic tribes of the Great Plains in America, and the children enjoyed having their lessons inside their large authentic teepee learning all about the indigenous American population, their crafts and their culture.
The children loved the atmosphere inside the teepee set up in the schools grounds – it certainly put a sense of excitement into the lessons.
Mrs Martindale, head of art, said: ‘The aim was to give the children a greater understanding of Native American culture. The whole school have been able to enjoy lessons in a different environment and have responded enthusiastically.’
Mrs Christie Riley, head of history said: ‘Broadening our pupils’ understanding of past civilisations and cultures outside of the classroom environment enriches their world view and enhances learning. Using all curriculum subjects as a platform to draw on their imagination through role play and engaging with their peers lets the pupils have fun and builds confidence. I’m all for taking learning outdoors!’
