Brentwood School netballers take county title
Posted on 27th Nov 2017 in School News, SportCongratulations to Brentwood School’s Under 16 netballers who fought off strong competition to clinch the County title in the National Schools’ Netball competition.
In a very strong and tough pool of 8 teams from schools within the East region, the girls showed discipline, continuity and tenacity to triumph in the closely-fought contest.
En route to the overall win, Brentwood had to top their group to progress through to a semi-final confrontation with the Ursuline. Despite being 2 goals down at half-time, the squad pulled the game back and eventually pushed ahead to win by two goals.
In the final, Brentwood faced a strong Southend team in high spirits after winning their semi-final by a substantial margin. The game went goal for goal until Southend broke ahead with a two goal advantage at half-time. Brentwood fought back and took the title by one goal in a truly well-deserved victory.
Faith Rufai, who was Player of the Tournament, led by example as a captain, and was dominant and tenacious in the defending circle, strongly supported by Zara Philips and Mia Citroen.
The mid-court Skye Lynch, Lucy Holloway, Sarah Dawe were outstanding and Anna Reeves, Lauren Burgin and Annie Shaw played a vital and game changing role in the attacking circle.
Head of Netball, Miss Annabel Simpson, said: “The team deserve huge congratulations for a massive achievement. The team are passionate, cohesive, enthusiastic, hardworking and committed to their netball.”
And the hard work continues as the girls prepare for the Regionals in January when they will be competing against bordering counties Kent, Suffolk and Hertfordshire. Success at the Regionals will see the girls progress to the Nationals.
