Cranleigh School Sixth Former crowned English National 100m breaststroke champion

Congratulations to Cranleigh School Sixth Form swim-star, Sophie Moore, on being crowned the National 100m breaststroke champion.

Sophie, 18, competed against strong university swimmers at both the English national summer championships and the British summer championships. At the English summer championships she won gold with the bronze and silver medalists both being in their mid twenties.

At the British summer championships, in which she had to be ranked in the top 24 in Britain to qualify for, she finished the fifth fastest 18-year-old in Britain in the 200m breaststroke, placing her 11th overall in the 18 and over category.

Still in her first year of open age, Sophie has worked incredibly hard in the pool to achieve her goals and is looking forward to the next stage of the journey.

She said: "I was super happy just to have qualified for the championships, given the calibre of competitors I am now up against and so I couldn’t be happier with the results and it was a great way to top off a brilliant season.”

Commenting on her 100, she added: "As a 200m swimmer my 50 speed is weaker and so going into the 100 final I knew I was going to be struggling to stay with the sprinters. After the first 50 I was in 10th, which meant I had some ground to make up on the second 50, however, as a 200 swimmer I did have more stamina which allowed me to go on to win the final with a big 1.1 second pb, making me English National Champion! I couldn’t have asked for a better season, it’s been out of this world. I'm so grateful for the support of the House staff and Head of Swimming, Mrs Doubtfire, as well as my Crawley team."
