Farlington students celebrate increase in top GCSE grades
Posted on 25th Aug 2023 in School News, GCSEsYear 11 students at Farlington School in Horsham, West Sussex, are today celebrating stronger GCSE results than those achieved before the pandemic in 2019, with 21% grade 9; 35% grades 9-8; 54% grades 9-7; and 95% grades 9-4.
Impressively, the number of grade 9s achieved by Farlington students this year has almost tripled since pre-pandemic examinations in 2019. In addition, the number of grades 9 to 7 has increased by 43% over the same period.
Headmaster James Passam says, “I am absolutely delighted to see so many of our students fulfil or exceed their academic potential in what is a much more challenging examination context nationally. These impressive results have been achieved across the breadth of subjects offered at Farlington and are a great credit to both the hard work of our students and the dedication of our teaching staff. Of particular note is how well many of our students achieved against expected outcomes, in many cases achieving above their baseline grades and in doing so, bucking the national trend.”
Farlington is exceptionally proud of all of its Year 11 students, not only those that achieved straight grade 9s and 8s, but also those who are celebrating achieving grades 4 to 7 through their hard work and endeavour. The school also recognises that examinations are only a part of all that Farlington students achieve both in and outside of the classroom.
“At Farlington there is a real sense that ‘we are all in this together’ – because it’s a smaller environment, there is so much support from staff and peers,” says Sophie, who has been at the school since Year 7 and is today celebrating an outstanding set of GCSE results. “The small classes here allow you to really engage with subjects on an emotional level. I’m now going to study Philosophy, English Literature and History A-Levels, and my passion for these subject areas is down to the brilliant teachers at Farlington.”
Penny Hart, Head of Senior School, says, “These results will stand our students in very good stead as they embark upon the next stage of their education. Here at Farlington, we are excited about the launch of our enhanced Sixth Form provision as we welcome our new intake into Year 12. The balance between new, existing, day and boarding students promises to make this a strong and vibrant year group.”
