Feast of cultures celebrated during King’s Ely International Week
Posted on 6th Feb 2018 in School News, International Education, Language LearningRussian phrases, German delicacies and Hindi dance moves were among some of the things learnt by students during King’s Ely International Week.
The annual initiative, now in its third year, sees King’s Ely students enjoying a whole host of activities themed around different cultures and languages from across the globe.
Activities this year included German cookery demonstrations, origami sessions, French baking, Spanish paella workshops – and of course, the highlight of the week, International Day on the Thursday, which saw King’s Ely International students teaching Year 9 pupils a whole host of facts and figures about their respective countries.
The Year 9 students were split into different groups, all of which enjoyed three different sessions throughout the day. All of the lessons were led by King’s Ely International students, and languages and cultures explored included Hindi, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin and Thai. The event not only celebrates King’s Ely’s strong international links but Year 9 pupils also learned a whole host of new phrases in different languages, as well as information about popular foods, traditions and important landmarks.
As ever, the event concluded with some outstanding musical and dance performances, again by King’s Ely International students, including beautiful singing by Jacky Chow, a moving Russian performance by Maya Deulina and a vibrant, traditional Indian dance by Arshdeep Hayer.
King’s Ely Junior students also got involved with the International Week celebrations this year. Pupils in Queen Philippa were treated to a superb presentation on Hong Kong by siblings Emily and Olivia during their house assembly, which was followed by some Chinese dancing. Year 7 students also created some fascinating presentations about their families in Spanish, and pupil Maya received a prize for her wonderful work.
