​Felsted pupils making a difference in Uganda

Felsted School pupils took a life changing trip to Uganda this summer, to see first-hand how they have been making a difference to the lives of some of the world’s poorest children through the Teach Uganda charity scheme, which provides vital education to children living near the Bwindi Rainforest.

Two years ago saw Felsted’s partner school, Great Lakes High School start up their very own A Level programme using money raised by Felsted School. During their visit, Felsted pupils and staff had the opportunity to teach GCSE lessons, with the very real challenge of limited resources. Many of the pupils sponsor children and were also able to meet them and see how much they had progressed. As a symbol of the bond between the two schools, a tree was painted onto the side of the school building, on which staff and pupils from both schools added their hand prints.

The charity was founded 20 years ago, teaching 70 children under a tree. It now has four primary schools, a secondary school, and a university, as well as water, health and solar projects. Costing only £180 per year to sponsor a child, Felsted School has been fundraising through many initiatives, including last year’s whole school colour run and this year’s ‘Beat Mo’ challenge which will see sponsored pupils running to beat Mo Farah’s marathon time in a series of relay runs.

Felsted Chaplain, Rev’d Little, a trustee of Teach Uganda, commented; “It is a huge privilege to visit Uganda and make a difference to so many children, indeed they are truly inspirational for us, achieving so much with so little and welcoming us with great joy.”
