The first exam results of the summer have shown pupils at a Shropshire school have achieved great success.

The results for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and BTEC Sports Coaching & Development course are out much earlier than the equivalent GCSE and A levels results - and at Ellesmere College students are already celebrating.

In the IB students gained results higher than the national average with 16% of this year’s cohort gaining 40 points or more, out of a maximum of 45 points, and 53% achieved 30 or more points, the gold standard for the IB Diploma.

At BTEC, 100% of students achieved a pass, several with Distinction, and the average result for Ellesmere College students sitting the Extended Diploma was equivalent to ABB at A level.

Acting Head at Ellesmere College, Vicky Pritt Roberts, said: “I am delighted for our pupils who have worked so tirelessly and consequently done so well in the International Baccalaureate Diploma and BTEC programmes. I commend them for how well they manage the rigorous demands of their chosen course of study so effectively, whilst taking advantage of the many co-curricular programmes on offer. They have certainly worked very hard both in and out of the classroom and achieved an excellent set of results and, consequently, are exceptionally well prepared for university or their chosen career path.”

Students who take the IB Diploma route study six subjects and complete the Theory of Knowledge course - they must achieve at least 24 points to achieve the Diploma. The global average score was 30.32 points and Ellesmere students achieved an impressive average score of 32 points.

The top performing student at Ellesmere College this year achieved 41 points, the equivalent of four A*s at A level.

The BTEC Diploma is equivalent to two A level courses and at Ellesmere College this year four students opted to complete the Extended Diploma, equal to three A Levels.

One student got distinction results D* DD, which is equivalent to A*AA at A Level.

Ellesmere College staff and students will also await GCSE and A level results next month for those pupils who took the alternative pathway.
