Former Llandovery College rugby stars George North and Alun Wyn Jones selected for Lions tour
Posted on 26th Apr 2017 in School News, SportGeorge North and Alun Wyn Jones, two famous former Llandovery College pupils, have been selected for the 2017 British and Irish Lions squad to tour New Zealand this summer.
Remarkably, this will be Alun Wyn Jones’ third tour and George North’s second tour with the British and Irish Lions, a considerable feat achieved against world class opposition.
Playing for the Lions is considered the pinnacle of any rugby player’s career and the College has produced no less than eight pupils who have been selected for the British and Irish Lions dating back to 1908 and amassing 12 tours and 16 caps between them!
Llandovery College is proud to have played a major part in regional, national and international rugby with over 50 former Llandoverians having notched up in excess of 500 caps for Wales.
Rugby continues to thrive at the College and the 2017 Six Nations Rugby Tournament saw Harry Randall play for England U20s, Alun Wyn Jones captain the Welsh side and, not to be outdone, another former pupil, Carys Phillips captaining the ladies national rugby team.
There are a number of younger College players already making their mark in the rugby world including Tomi Lewis and Aron Hemmings who played for the U18s in the last Six Nations Rugby Tournament. Look out for the rising stars of the future!
These achievements are an enormous source of pride and inspiration for the College and to Alun Wyn, George and those that are following in their footsteps, congratulations and good luck!
Iestyn Thomas, Head of Rugby at Llandovery College said: “Llandovery College has an impressive history of producing Lions that have played throughout the decades and particularly so in recent years when two players from the College have been part of the last three British and Irish Lions Tours. This rich history of tradition combined with recent success allows pupils at Llandovery College to aspire to the very pinnacle of rugby achievement with a degree of reality.”
