Pocklington School has appointed former Rugby Football Union (RFU) Under 18 National Academy coach, Richard Wareham, as Master in Charge of Rugby.

He will take over the position previously held by Sean Houltham and also support the PE department.

“I am really looking forward to becoming part of the Pocklington School community,” said Mr Wareham. “Since childhood my passion has been sport, in particular rugby. I cannot wait to meet everyone and bring with me my coaching philosophy, ‘better person, better player!'”

Mr Wareham is a level 4 RFU coach which is the highest coaching accolade possible at this stage. He also has a strong playing pedigree having played for England Students, British Isles Students, the England Under 21 team and captaining England Universities. He also played for Rotherham Tigers.

He was previously Head of Boys PE and games at Silcoates School and Mount St Mary’s College, and Director of Rugby at both Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Otley and Bishop Burton College.

Director of Sport at Pocklington School, David Byas, is delighted with the appointment: “We are thrilled to have someone with such pedigree and I am confident that Richard will ensure continued progress for the crop of talent coming through the school,” he said.

Another new addition to the Sports Department is former pupil Lucy Hornby (02-04). Lucy will teach in the PE Department and bring a wealth of knowledge and energy to the sports programme specifically in Girls’ Hockey and Netball. Her previous teaching posts have been at Ampleforth College and Stamford High School.

Mr Byas concluded: “These are two terrific appointments and I am confident they will bring tremendous knowledge, experience and energy to the entire community here at Pocklington School.”
