Posted on 13th Nov 2018 in School NewsChildren at Hazlegrove Prep School commemorated the 100th anniversary of Armistice with a seven-metre long collage of hand made poppies, a special service of remembrance and assembly.
To commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the Armistice, a special Assembly was held for the pupils at Hazlegrove Prep School. Children gave readings from two WW1 songs: ‘There's A Long, Long Trail A-Winding’ and ‘Roses of Picardy’.
Poetry from WW1 was quoted including ‘Everyone Sang’ by Siegfried Sassoon. Images from WW1 were shown accompanied by the Director of Music, Vicky Sayles haunting violin piece, ‘Lark Ascending’ by Vaughan Williams. Traditional hymns were sung and prayers of remembrance were said.
At 11 o’clock, the whole school community stood together at the flagpole to remember those who have given their lives in conflict. The service was led by Headmaster, Mark White who was joined by Commander Armstrong from the Royal Navy.
Over half-term staff, children and parents received poppy making kits and were invited to create poppies which have been assembled to create an absolutely stunning seven-metre long collage which include 28 white crosses to commemorate the men connected with Hazlegrove, who died in WW1, WW2 and Afghanistan. The collage includes a quote from ‘Everyone Sang’ by Siegfried Sassoon.
Headmaster, Mark White said: "The act of remembrance is an opportunity to look both backwards to the past but also forward and to acknowledge that this has great relevance to the young children in our care. Bright red Flanders poppies, known for their resilience and tenacious ability to grow in even the most challenging of environments symbolise the hope of a better future for all."
