Highfield and Brookham children support young people across Petersfield and Alton

Every year children at Highfield and Brookham Schools support a charity. The children are given the opportunity to vote for the charity they want to support and last academic year The King’s Arms Charity, based in Petersfield, was their chosen cause.

The King’s Arms affectionately known as 'KA’, is a charity that has been set up to meet the needs of the young people of Petersfield and Alton and surrounding villages. They run a range of clubs for different age groups. They want the young people of this region to fulfil their potential and know their worth. Their hope is that the young people will take ownership of their club and help us to turn it into something that meets their needs and inspires them to get the best out of life.

Mrs Sophie Baber, Headteacher at Brookham Schoolsaid, “We place great importance on children understanding their place in the wider community. It has been truly heart-warming to see our children so animated about raising money for this brilliant local charity.”

A variety of fundraising activities were held throughout the year including a Danceathon, a Christmas hamper raffle and the designing and selling of t-shirts. These initiatives raised an amazing £4,129.50 for The King’s Arms.

Will Schofield, The King’s Arms said, “Thank you for a very generous donation. This could not have come at a better time as we work hard to get our new premises in Dragon Street ready to receive young people. Despite Covid-19, we are continuing to support young people in Alton, Petersfield and the surrounding area with various online groups, one-to-one mentoring and some home visits. The Kings Arms is dependent upon the generosity of those who support us and local goodwill is particularly important to us. Thank-you again.”

This year the children have already voted and this year they will support Highfield Highreach Holidays. This charity is a small volunteer-run organisation that provides a week-long residential holiday for young people, aged 8 -16 years old, with a range of learning difficulties. It allows them to enjoy an incredible week full of memorable experiences in the safe environment of Highfield and Brookham Schools. It also provides crucial respite for the families of these children.
