Highfield and Brookham Schools return to fixtures

Young cricketers from Highfield and Brookham Schools, an independent school in Liphook, have shaken off their dusty wickets to return to external sporting fixtures for the first time in over a year.

The jubilant boys and girls overcame a long absence from the sports field, caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, to play the competition from Lambrook School in Bracknell, Berkshire.

Despite the inclement weather, 24 fixtures were held on Wednesday 28th April for the U10 – U13 Boys’ and Girls’ Cricket teams. Half were held at Highfield and Brookham and the other half at Lambrook. The U10A Boys’ were one of the victorious teams, beating their Lambrook opponents by 10 wickets.

Phillip Evitt, Highfield Headmaster said: “We’ve had a long wait but it was all worthwhile to see our children return to competitive match action. You could see that they were delighted to get back on to the cricket pitch after so long away and they did themselves and the school proud.”

The return of competitive inter-school sport is another step closer to some sort of normality as the fight against Covid-19 continues. All social contact restrictions are expected to be lifted on 21st June, just a few weeks before the end of term, which means that the children will have to wait just a little longer before their parents can return to the boundary line to cheer them on. But if the success of last week’s matches is anything to go by, then the future looks bright.
