King’s Ely athletes crowned Isle of Ely District champions!

Athletes from both King’s Ely Junior and King’s Ely Senior battled it out in the championships, which were held in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, on May 22nd.
Students fought hard for every point and it paid off, with King’s Ely’s team winning an impressive 22 Gold, 15 Silver and 15 Bronze medals, resulting in them being crowned the overall winners on the day.
Gold medals for King’s Ely Senior came from Emily Pluck (800m), Katie Cameron (hurdles and high jump), Ben Marshall (hurdles and high jump), Lottie Webster (100m), Beth Carberry (300m), Hannah Paling (200m), Grace Morris (1500m), Billy McGrath (discus), Harriet Cheseney-Culley (triple jump and long jump), Ben Smith (high jump), Will Taylor (javelin), and Gabriel Boon (javelin). Gold winners for King’s Ely Junior were George Nearney (200m), Connor Marshall (high jump), Tom Bateman (triple jump), Jessica Harding (discus), Annabelle Gilbert (shot put), Lauren Booth (discus), and Tabitha Lacey (high jump).
King’s Ely Senior’s Silver medal winners were Mikey Turner (800m), Ben Barker (200m), Sam Barber (1500m), Tom Kim (1500m), Ben Tong (shot put), and Ben Marshall (triple jump). For King’s Ely Junior, the Silver medal winners were Robert Banwell (800m), Ben Collier (800m), Tabitha Lacey (hurdles), Connor Marshall (hurdles), George Nearney (100m), Connor Henry (300m), Joseph Beeney (1500m) and Tom Jackson (discus).
Bronze medal winners for King’s Ely Senior were Alex Scarborough (400m), Harriet Froud (1500m), Beth Carberry (shot put and discus), Madison Boldero (discus), Gabriel Boon (long jump), and Lottie Webster (javelin). King’s Ely Junior’s Bronze medal winners were Sydney Smith (800m), Annabelle Gilbert (100m), Kylo Brackley (300m), Maddie Upton (200m), Sophie Hillier (long jump), Francesca Stevens (javelin), Lauren Booth (1500m), and Alice Wallace (1500m).
King’s Ely’s success at the Isle of Ely Athletics Championships came just days after students were victorious at this year’s Country Clubs Athletics Championships, held in Peterborough.
King’s Ely Senior student Ben Marshall won two Gold medals in the triple jump and hurdles. Katie Cameron won a Silver medal in the high jump and Billy McGrath won Silver in the discus.
King’s Ely Junior pupil Thomas Bateman gained a personal best in the triple jump, as did Connor Marshall in the 300m. George Nearney made it through to both the 100m and 200m finals on the day and Bertie Whymark secured a Bronze medal after throwing an impressive 18.43 metres.
On May 18th, nineteen Year 5 and 6 King’s Ely Junior students competed in the Cornwell Shield Athletics competition held at Kimbolton School. Each student put a huge amount of effort into each run, jump and throw, with some fine individual performances from Jack Hammond winning the 300m, Quentin Mitchell winning the 200m and Freddie Nearney winning the long jump.
On the same day, Year 7 and 8 King’s Ely Junior students also travelled to Gresham’s School in Norfolk to compete in the Eight Schools Athletics Meet. A total of 19 King’s Ely students qualified for the National Prep School Athletics Championships (Eastern Region), being held in Bedford in June, including George Nearney who secured a win in both the 100m and 200m.
