Millfield launches GCSE Dance programme
Posted on 20th Feb 2020 in School News, GCSEs, Performing ArtsMillfield has launched a new GCSE Dance programme beginning in September 2020. The GCSE programme, which is open to students in Year 10 and Year 11, follows three strands of learning; performance, choreography and dance appreciation. It aims to develop knowledge, understanding and practical experience of the wide range of dance choreographed and performed today and is suitable for students with an interest in dance performance and choreography.
The GCSE Dance offers tutelage in a diverse, modern range of styles and fusions, including contemporary dance, modern ballet, hip hop, and dance for camera, and culminates in a showcase final performance, including the creation of a dance film and live performance pieces. It is assessed in three ways: through a solo performance, a solo or group piece of choreography, and a written exam on choreographic processes.
GCSE students studying dance at Millfield will be supported by an extensive dance programme. Over 60 pupils, both boys and girls, are taught by six tutors at Millfield and take part in over 30 classes a week in two well-equipped dance studios with brand new professional Harlequin sprung floors. Classes are available in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Street Dance, Contemporary and Musical Theatre. The R.A.D ballet syllabus is offered from Grade 5 to vocational level, as well as I.S.T.D Modern and Tap.
Millfield in Somerset is also one of a select number of schools nationally to take part in a pilot programme for the new Rambert Contemporary Dance grades, and currently offers contemporary classes at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
Dancers at Millfield perform for the local community in Tea and Dance performances, as well as showcasing their talent in three major Dance Shows, including the Summer Promenade and the Ballet Show, each year. Millfield also host workshops and performances from visiting dance companies.
Millfield Dancers have gone on to achieve great success, with current Upper Sixth ballet dancer Sophie Glover scoring a perfect technical mark in the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) Grade 8 Ballet Examination Award, and recent leaver Alice Kramer securing a place at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music in London last year.
