Millfield musician offered scholarships at top UK conservatoires
Posted on 26th Jan 2021 in School News, Music, University Study, ScholarshipsMillfield Upper Sixth musician Woon Ngee Ng has received offers from four of the UK’s top music universities, including Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music, and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has also received scholarship offers from the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, both with Double Bass as her principal study.
The eighteen-year-old from Singapore is due to take Music Performance Diplomas on both Double Bass and Piano. These are just two of her Grade 8 qualifications, with Woon Ngee also completing this feat on the Guzheng, when she was just 12 years old. Woon Ngee is studying A level Music, Chemistry and Mathematics at leading independent school Millfield in Somerset.
While at Millfield, Woon Ngee has performed an impressive number of solo recitals on both Double Bass and Piano. She is a dedicated member of the thriving chamber music department, in addition to playing a key role in several of Millfield’s larger ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Band. Most recently, Woon Ngee has also enjoyed participation in the school’s award-winning Chamber Choir, Camerata. The student also received bespoke tutoring during specialist masterclasses in both Jazz and Baroque styles, with British jazz trumpeter Chris Batchelor (Zoetic) and Junior Academy teacher and violinist Debbie Diamond.
Students at Millfield have full use of the purpose-built Music School, which includes the Johnson Hall, a 350-seat Concert Hall with superb acoustics and a stage large enough to host a full orchestra and choir, and a Recital Foyer. The department also has 30 rehearsal and practice spaces, four fully equipped Mac suites, a specialist percussion room, professional standard recording studios, and an outstanding collection of instruments, including a Steinway Model D Concert Grand. Students can perform in over 60 events a year and participate in renowned music festivals and competitions including regular services and concerts at Wells Cathedral and tours across the globe. Millfield Music School are proud to host their own prestigious annual Concerto Concert, in which students are given the opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra and conductor, in addition to a very-popular Musician of the Year competition.
Woon Ngee joins a long list of Millfield music scholars who have gone on to study at some of the finest conservatoires and universities in the world. In recent years, Millfield musicians have gone on to study at institutions including Curtis Institute, Royal College of Music, Royal Academy of Music, Royal Northern College of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
