Millfield Sixth Former Benjamin signs for Audi for the 2020 GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup
Posted on 21st Sep 2020 in School News, SportMillfield Lower Sixth student Benjamin Goethe has begun a career in professional motorsport after signing for Belgian Audi Club team WRT for the GT (Grand Touring) World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, a four-round series which began in Imola, Italy and runs until Autumn 2020.
Benjamin, who is currently a ROFGO Junior driver, now follows in the footsteps of professional motorsport drivers Lando Norris (F1 McLaren) and Sam Bird (Formula E Envision Virgin Racing), who both attended Millfield School.
Millfield, one of the UK’s leading independent schools, has a specialised, holistic programme for students who hope to compete in international sporting events, allowing for balance between academic and extra-curricular commitments. The school, which is home to up to 60 international athletes at any one time, provides support services such as athletic development, nutrition education, physiotherapy and psychology, and offers the chance for high ability sports students to connect with other like-minded individuals.
The promising teenager, who began his career in GT racing just last year and is one of the youngest competitiors in the sport, was presented with the SRO Merit Award for his performance in the 2019 Blancpain GT Series (the former name of the GT World Challenge Europe).
As part of the four-round series, Benjamin will make his debut in the world-famous 24 Hours of Spa, which has been moved to October this year.
GT Racing is a form of circuit auto racing with automobiles that have two seats and enclosed wheels. It is a popular national and international motorsport where cars can reach speeds up to 186 mph.
Benjamin says, “I chose to come to Millfield because I wanted to finish my schooling in a school where sport is highly regarded and where I can successfully complete my studies. Out of the car I train in the gym everyday and I test the car every few weeks with a race once every month. Millfield is very supportive of my racing career. They allow me flexibility with my studies whilst giving me the perfect platform to physically prepare myself. Other than building a track on campus, the school is doing everything they can to support my racing career already - there is no better place for me in my career right now. My dream is just to compete and hopefully win races, with my ultimate goal being to drive for a manufacturer and one day win Le Mans.”
