Sixth Formers Joseph Deighan, William Ellington, Evan Jones and Tamryn van Selm will compete for Great Britain and Year 11 Dimitrios Tsaliagkos will represent his home country Greece. The championships are a chance for young, promising athletes to compete on the international stage in the first competition for junior athletes in over two years. Tamryn van Selm will look to uphold her performance at the recent European Championships where she won gold as part of the 4 x 200 women’s relay in Budapest.
1500m freestyler Joe and 200m breaststroke specialist William are currently in Swim England’s National Junior Squad for the 2020-21 season. Joe said, “I am very happy with my selection, it is testament to the hard work we all put in during the tough lockdown months, along with the help and guidance of our coaches and the outstanding facilities we have access to here at Millfield.”
Director of Swimming, Euan Dale added, “The European Juniors is a fantastic platform to start your international journey. It is about enjoying the experience and more importantly, learning from the opportunity. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the parents, Millfield coaches, support staff and home coaches who have been instrumental in helping develop these students and making their goal a reality. Well done to the students, a remarkable achievement and one they should be immensely proud of.”
The selected swimmers will be hoping to follow the pathway of Old Millfieldians who have recently been selected for the Tokyo Olympics. Olympic silver medallist James Guy (2008-2014), Brodie Williams (2013-2017) and Kieran Bird (2016-2018) have all been selected to compete in Tokyo for Great Britain whilst recent leaver Danilo Rosafio (2018-2020) will represent Kenya.
The Junior Swimming Championships are being held in Rome, Italy, from 6 - 10 July.
