MPW student wins ISA national competition with short film exploring gender in society
Posted on 29th Nov 2017 in School News, DramaMPW – London is delighted to announce that student Laura Aris recently won first prize in the ISA Film and Digital Art competition with her short film, Days Like These.
Laura had no previous film-making experience when she decided to explore gender in society through her seven-and-a-half minute short featuring a male actor subverting gender norms.
Head of Art at MPW, Gregoris Ioannou, commented: “I’m so proud of Laura; she really deserved it, she has worked so hard.”
Laura said: “I absolutely loved the experience and am so glad that I took the gamble and did something that is so close to my heart.”
Laura says she used the film to demonstrate her belief that the manner in which we express ourselves should not be defined by our gender. She found making the film an exposing but inspiring experience; it was when working on this film and an accompanying photography project that she felt for the first time that she had found her passion and a medium through which to express herself.
She also said that shooting the film “proved to be a good laugh, sitting on the back of a bike precariously balancing my camera trying to get a good shot and the builders cat calling my model before realising that he was a boy and looking shocked was priceless.”
MPW is very proud of Laura’s hard work and well-deserved achievement, not to mention her thoughtful and insightful exploration of a sensitive and contemporary topic.
