Next steps for Millfield Upper Sixth cohort

After another unique year for exam-aged students, Millfield’s Upper Sixth embark on exciting journeys, in academia, sport, music and the arts, in the UK and overseas.

Millfield students have displayed exceptional resilience and determination to be rewarded with excellent results.

The majority of students have accepted offers to continue their studies both in the UK and overseas and we have featured some below:

Cameron Pike has a 100% scholarship (academic and sporting) from Clayton State University, Georgia. Somerset boy Cameron joined Millfield for Sixth Form studying BTEC Sport and was the first team goalkeeper. In 2019, he was selected for the English Schools Football Association (ESFA) National U18 side.

Yuhka Machino is heading to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to read mathematics having also had an offer from Cambridge. She is currently ranked the world’s top school-age female mathematician for the second year running after competing in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). Yuhka joined Millfield Prep School in Year 6 and studied A level maths, chemistry and physics. She has been a valued member of the maths, badminton, swimming and music communities, as a grade 8 pianist, during her time at Millfield.

Keen tennis player Alex Knox-Jones has been awarded a place at the prestigious, Ivy League University, Dartmouth College. He will combine academics with his tennis where he will compete in division one of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He studied A level maths, chemistry and physics.

High jumper Seb Clatworthy will be joining Alex across the pond at another Ivy League University, Princeton. Seb studied A level maths, economics and psychology and also undertook his bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh awards during his time at Millfield. Seb recently took part in the Senior Boys High Jump at the English Schools Championships.

Jami Schlueter has been awarded an athletics scholarship at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has been an inspirational member of the student body, taking up post as Head Boy, alongside supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and being an advocate for diversity, equality and inclusion at school. Jami studied A level geography, German and psychology.

Tom Bradley has accepted a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music, Boston. Drummer Tom, former Head of School also, received offers from University of Nottingham (Music and Music Technology), University of Liverpool (Popular Music) and a coveted place on the Popular Music Course at Royal Northern College of Music, one of only six places with Drum Kit as a specialist instrument. Tom studied BTEC music and A level art and design, and English.

Highly talented musician, Woon Ngee Ng will be studying at the Royal Academy of Music for double bass. Woon studied A level chemistry, maths and music. Director of Music, Matt Cook, describes her as, “A highly accomplished musician, Woon Ngee is one of the most academically remarkable students I have come across; her current achievement and future potential is simply staggering.”

Future medical professionals have succeeded in receiving places to study medicine on established courses at universities across the country. This year, Millfield students received five offers amongst three candidates; Jasmine Nobbs (Liverpool), Emily Paterson (Oxford and Southampton) and Polly Painter (Birmingham and Southampton). Jasmine and Polly both studied A level biology, chemistry and psychology and Emily studied A level biology, chemistry and French.

Thespian Advait Patodia received offers for courses in business and drama and has chosen the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) to study drama. Advait studied Mathematics, Economics and Business A level and got involved in drama as a child to conquer a speech impediment. Now nothing makes him happier than being in front of a camera performing and he aspires to be a screen actor. At Millfield he hosted an alumni talk show, co-created the Model United Nations club and took part in student council, debating and cricket.

Six students have received offers to study at the increasingly popular IE University, Madrid. The university has an exchange programme with their 160 partner establishments around the world, and is ranked within the top 30 universities for global employability.

Millfield Headmaster, Gavin Horgan, says, “It is a real delight to see the variety of top universities that our Upper Sixth students are progressing on to, and that all of their hard work has paid off during a unique two years of education. The sheer breath and depth of destinations that our students are choosing, depending on their own aspirations, is remarkable and they are an inspiration to our Lower Sixth students and beyond. It also shows that Millfield is not just about sport, contrary to popular belief. They have trumped over adversity and learnt life skills of resilience and independence and experienced having to adapt to a new normal and I commend them for that. We wish all students the best of luck and look forward to welcoming you back on campus whenever you are passing.”
