Forty-six pupils from Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Holbrook, Ipswich, visited Sizewell B nuclear power station in Sizewell, Suffolk, to learn about electricity production and its environmental impact.
During the trip, the Year 10 GCSE Triple Science students learnt how the reactor works and produces the electricity, and were given a tour of the power plant, during which they could feel the vibrations from the massive turbines.
The pupils also saw how the environmental impact of the nuclear power station is limited when taking water from the North Sea to cool the hot water produced by the reactor.
Stephanie Ryan, Teacher of Chemistry at Royal Hospital School, said: “Both pupils and staff expanded their knowledge of energy production, seeing first-hand how the theory from school books is applied in practice, and were amazed by the size of the plant and the knowledge of the volunteers who conducted the tour.”
