St Swithun’s School student wins silver medal at England Schools Athletics Championships
Posted on 21st Jul 2023 in School News, Competition, SportAbi, a talented young athlete from Year 9 at St Swithun’s School, has achieved an impressive feat by securing the silver medal in the U15 girls discus event at the prestigious England Schools Athletics Championships. Abi's determination and perseverance propelled her to a second place finish.
Not only did Abi leave a lasting impact on the field, but she also formed numerous friendships with athletes from across the country, fostering a sense of camaraderie and unity.
Abi’s success continues a proud family legacy in athletics. Her sister, Erin, previously secured the bronze medal in the same event in 2021, while also achieving an impressive fourth place in the U17 Women's discus this year.
Training at Winchester and District Athletics Club under the guidance of her father, Abi has thrived as part of a formidable throwing squad. Her training regime includes rigorous sessions two to three times a week, supplemented by strength and conditioning exercises, overseen by the strength and conditioning coach at St Swithun’s.
Discus is not the only sporting activity that Abi takes part in, she also enjoys representing her school in swimming, where she has achieved success as a Hampshire County swimming medallist. She also relishes the opportunity to run on the school’s track and was part of the team who won the Girls’ Team award at the Winchester and Eastleigh District schools' competition. She has also qualified for the regional finals of the England Schools Track and Field cup.

Abi says of her success: “I’m really pleased with my silver medal at England Schools and the fact that I am also now ranked number 1 for discus in the UK for U15’s. I am also grateful to St Swithun’s for all their support in helping me prepare for the competitions this year’.
