Claire Dickerson, Head of Bromley High Junior School, looks back at a prize-winning year for students who have been encouraged to tackle new challenges...
At Bromley High Junior School we value opportunities for our girls to collaborate, innovate and embrace challenges across curriculum areas, both within and outside of our school environment. We are delighted that in the past year, in true GDST spirit our girls are storming new frontiers by successfully engaging with national and organisational competitions.
As part of a business themed Enterprise Week, all our Year 6 entrepreneurial teams entered the John Lewis Innovation Challenge 2017 to design a Community Hub. We were delighted to learn that, not only did we have the outright winner, we had also been awarded 3rd - 7th place inclusively!
The responsibility we have in shaping the future of girls’ education is always at the forefront of everything we do. Science and Technology have a high profile. Our budding engineers from Year 2 won their category in the CLEAPSS 2017 Science and Technology competition, with their marble run entry designed during STEM week.
Being a GDST school provides a valuable networking platform for the girls and is an endorsement of who we are and what we offer. The opportunity to sing in one of London’s prestigious concert venues, the Cadogan Hall for the GDST Choir of the Year Final was a fantastic experience for our Junior girls.
We are delighted to have become members of IAPS this year and are planning to take advantage of the wider variety of Prep School events and competitions on offer. It was wonderful to be placed 3rd in the Year 1-2 category of the iArt competition for young artists.
We place great value on reaching out to our local community and Year 5 girls embraced an exciting community initiative to transform the current paper-based nature trail in our local Jubilee Park into a modern and interactive form by creating videos and embedding them into a Google map.
These experiences help the girls to develop their skills and talents and to feel confident to have their voice heard and be able to bounce back from setbacks with renewed energy to succeed and above all make an impact. We encourage them not to be shy of having high expectations when they face new challenges.
