Tonbridge boys show ‘hard work and determination’ as they achieve excellent GCSEs
Posted on 6th Sep 2023 in School News, GCSEsTonbridge boys have achieved an excellent set of GCSE and IGCSE results for 2023. In results made public on Thursday 24 August, 46 per cent of grades are at 9, the highest possible grade, and three quarters (75 per cent) are at 9 and 8 (with both grades the equivalent of A*). Third Year students have also achieved the following:
- 93 per cent of grades are at 9, 8 or 7, which is the equivalent of gaining either an A* or A
- Nearly all grades (more than 98 per cent) are at 9-6 (equivalent to A*-B)
- A total of 54 boys (more than a third of the entire Third Year cohort) achieved exclusively 9-8 grades (ie, all GCSEs equivalent to straight A*s)
- A total of 104 boys (two thirds of the Third Year cohort) achieved exclusively 9-7 grades (ie, all GCSEs equivalent to A*/As)
- 31 boys achieved nine or more grade 9s
As widely reported, exams regulator Ofqual has said a return to pre-pandemic grading means this year's national GCSE results in England are lower than in the past three years and more in line with 2019 levels.
James Priory, Tonbridge’s Headmaster, congratulated the Third Year cohort: “This is an outstanding set of results, achieved by a great deal of hard work and determination by students and teachers alike.
“Our boys will now be starting a new and exciting chapter at Tonbridge as they move into the Sixth Form, and I have every confidence they will continue to show the same intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm and creativity as they embark on their A-level courses. Well done to all.”
Mr Priory added: “Our Sixth Form Curriculum (launched in 2020) has proved highly popular with students and parents, delivering a superb learning experience as well as the best possible preparation for university and future careers. We also look forward to our Sixth Formers taking on leadership responsibilities and playing a key role in the academic, co-curricular and community life of the school.”
Tonbridge was ranked as the 8th best school in the country in Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2023, which is based on A-level and GCSE performance. Tonbridge was also the country’s top performing boys’ boarding school.
