Wellington's Jamie to represent UK at International Biology Olympiad

Jamie beat over 7,500 other students from 675 schools at the British Biology Olympiad (BBO) to gain a place on the team for the international final.

The UK team of four students will compete against students from over 60 other countries, taking part in theoretical and practical tasks and challenges designed to test their biosciences acumen and stretch their understanding of the subject to the limit.

The International Biology Olympiad (IBO), which has been held in countries as far afield as Vietnam, Denmark, Taiwan and Singapore in the past, is taking place for the first time ever in the UK at the University of Warwick from the 23rd to the 30th of July.

Jamie already has an offer to read Medicine at Emmanuel College Cambridge next year, but will now have to balance revision for his A Level examinations with preparation for the IBO.

His Biology teacher, Mr Nik Light, said, “We’re really proud of Jamie at Wellington. We recognised early in his time at the College that he was a highly capable Biologist, enjoying tackling concepts in lessons which were beyond the scope of Sixth Form Biology courses, and it’s great that this has been reflected in making the British Olympiad team.

“As well as being a very kind and charming young man, Jamie’s intellectual characteristics of genuine curiosity, a desire to tackle new problems and a willingness to share his understanding with others meant that he enjoyed the Olympiad and is well-suited to face the challenging problems set.”

Everyone at Wellington wishes Jamie every success for the IBO in July and will be watching the team’s progress closely.
