Women’s cricket thriving at Dauntsey’s

As England celebrate winning the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup,  Dauntsey’s is delighted to see women’s cricket thriving at the School. The sport has been growing steadily in popularity over the last three years when the Girls’ Cricket Club was started. 

There have been fixtures for two seasons and this term they played four matches, winning two and losing two. The School is now planning to start offering girls’ cricket as a games option. The aim is to eventually merge both boys and girls cricket so that gender is not a separating factor and teams are decided solely on talent and ability.

Phoebe, a third former from Dauntsey’s said: “I’m encouraging other girls to have a go as everyone is really supportive in the Club and we are great progress, thanks to the coaching we have had. I sometimes practice with my brothers who play cricket and they have given me some good tips too!”

Sarah Rountree, Dauntsey’s coach for girls’ cricket said; “The girls are very enthusiastic and train twice a week in their spare time, while playing their matches outside of normal school hours. We have even occasionally been able to organise mixed training nets sessions which allows them to show off their talents while facing players who have more experience.

“The Women’s World Cup has been an inspiration and a handful of pupils were lucky enough to be at Lords to watch England win the final.”

With almost 150 acres of grounds, Dauntsey’s has excellent sports facilities including: eight rugby/football pitches, two AstroTurf hockey pitches, seven all-weather netball/tennis courts, an athletics track, a heated sports hall, a newly equipped fitness suite, a heated indoor swimming pool, two squash courts and a newly refurbished sports pavilion.
