World Book Day at Highfield and Brookham Schools

World Book Day started with a big surprise this year as The Mad Hatter had taken over Brookham School to set up his very own tea party. Year 1 were feeling particularly generous and decided to give him a hand setting up and spent the morning making delicious sandwiches for him and his guests to enjoy.

The excitement didn’t stop at Brookham School. Highfield School kicked off their day with an early morning catwalk through the chapel. Everyone was there: Harry Potter, The Boy In Dress, Robin Hood and even Donald Trump and Theresa May made a guest appearance.

The teachers did not miss out on the excitement either. They had two competitions running throughout the day: ‘Shelfies’ and ‘Book Portraits’. Teachers took a photograph of a shelf containing a selection of books which summarised their interests or personality from which the children had try to guess their identity. They were also encouraged to take a selfie holding their favourite book covering their face, with a sentence on why it’s their favourite.

Phillip Evitt, Headmaster at Highfield School says, “World Book Day is a story in itself with its planning of costumes, excitement, delight and laughter as these are revealed as everybody arrives at the start of the day, and swiftly followed by teachers and pupils all involved in the triumphant ‘Parade of Characters’ in the Chapel.

"Costumes are only a part of the story, as in the weeks before the English Department and School Librarian collaborate on a myriad of brilliantly imaginative and inspiring book related competitions, displays and challenges to promote a love of reading. Today’s event has been an absolute joy and the imagination and creativity of costumes and characters from children and teachers has reached new heights.”

Highfield and Brookham School will be holding their next open day on Thursday 21st March at 10am until 12 noon. So, if you would like to have a nose around the schools’ libraries and all of their other fantastic facilities you can get in touch at office@brookhamschool.co.uk or on 01428 722 005.
