Wycombe Abbey pupils celebrate impressive offers from UK, US and international universities
Posted on 5th Mar 2024 in School News, Sixth Form, University StudyUpper Sixth pupils at Wycombe Abbey are celebrating an impressive set of university offers from UK, US and international universities.
Wycombe Abbey is delighted that many pupils are choosing a wide range of degrees from top universities across the globe, with some of the most popular areas of study being Geography, Medicine, Classics, Economics, Politics, Law and Natural Sciences. Eighteen pupils have received offers from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, whilst other world-class institutions such as UCL (20), Imperial (9), KCL (28), Durham (22), Edinburgh (9), St Andrews (4), Bath (8), Warwick (16) and Bristol (22) remain extremely popular. The school is also excited that an Upper Sixth pupil has been offered two prestigious degree apprenticeships with Deloitte and KPMG.
Applying to US institutions is an in-depth process requiring motivation, diligence and organisation for each application, and successful applicants are met with outstanding, world-class opportunities. Lower Sixth applicants meet weekly with the school's Head of US and International Universities, Mr Tourle, from January onwards. These sessions support them with the formulation of college lists, academic monitoring, and the development of co-curricular profiles. The cohort also meet weekly to focus on research and hear from external speakers and previous applicants and graduates for further insights. Records have been broken by the 26 US applicants this year, both in the number and diversity of institutions applied to; 220 applications were submitted to almost 100 institutions! The final deadline for results will be around late March/early April (with 1 May being Decision Day for non-binding applicants), and pupils await outcomes for 150 applications. The school is delighted to announce that pupils have so far received offers from the following US institutions: Barnard College, Brown University, Cornell University, Georgia Institute of Technology (2), Johns Hopkins University (2), New York University, Merrimack College, Purdue University, University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Michigan – Ann Arbor (4), University of Miami, UNC Chapel Hill, Yale University. For girls who wish to study at top US universities, the process for entry starts in Lower Fifth (Year 10) with the Wycombe Abbey Four Year US Higher Education Pathway.
Upper Sixth pupils have also applied to a range of other international universities, including those in Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Australia, and to date, several offers have been secured from HKU (7) and Bucconi (2). The school remains very proud of each girl and celebrates every offer they receive. Having aimed high – as is right for Wycombe Abbey girls – and worked hard, this cohort has faced fierce competition for places and been rewarded with great success. The school wishes all of the applicants the very best as they wait for their remaining offers, whether they be for UK or international institutions, and focus on their upcoming A level exams.
