Introduction

Clifton High School is a thriving, co-educational independent day school for pupils aged 3 to 18 years old. Centrally located in the heart of Clifton Village, a picturesque suburb of Bristol; a city that is renowned for its culture, architecture and beautiful green spaces. The School's Victorian buildings are immersed in history and embrace tradition.

Founded in 1877, Clifton High School was established by the first Headmaster of Clifton College, John Percival, and like-minded visionaries with a simple will to create a girls' school. Whilst we pride ourselves on remaining true to these individuals core principles, we are unafraid of change and continue to offer a solid education focused on holistic values with an emphasis on an exceptionally nurturing approach to learning.

Our all-through School is built upon a welcoming and lively community, whereby all children's emotional, social, and physical development is considered the supremacy of wellbeing. Realising individual brilliance is an authentic strategy in which we achieve success on every level to ensure each child reaches their full potential.

Clifton High School's Ethos

All Clifton High School children are driven by our core values of Curiosity, Empathy, Love and Direction which reinforce the well-rounded, bespoke education, delivered by our staff members. This holistic method of learning is incorporated into all elements of School life, developing children's passions, and engaging them in a safe and encouraging environment. They naturally gain confidence whilst learning to deal with both success and defeat, creating a culture strengthened by applauding our differences whether it be in gender, age, race, colour, nationality, ethnicity, disability, religion, financial status or culture.

Academic Success

Clifton High School is an academically selective school. From Pre-School through to Sixth Form pupils are taught in small class sizes by highly skilled subject specialist teachers in a setting conducive to an organised, rounded and creative approach to learning. Ample resources, a wealth of facilities and a rich selection of co-curricular offerings all support an esteemed education that benefits the evolving mindset of our pupils.

Academic results at the School speak for themselves and are consistently outstanding, meeting and exceeding baseline grade predictions in every subject, revealing clear evidence of the achievements of our GCSE and A level pupils. In 2023, 73.4% of A level students achieved A*-B grades and 95.7% of GCSE pupils achieved 9-4 in both Mathematics and English.

At the beginning of GCSE and A level courses, pupils sit baseline tests that lead to predicted grades with year on year, pupils consistently exceeding them. We pride ourselves on the record high added value our teaching brings to pupils' grades.

These excellent academic results are clear evidence of the incorporation of the successful Diamond Edge Model of Education into our teaching methods. This allows pupils to be supported in their individual dynamic needs; teaching boys and girls separately in the core subjects of Mathematics, English and the Sciences during Years 7, 8 and 9.

Facilities

Clifton High School pupils benefit from access to a wealth of exceptional on-site and external facilities and resources that contribute to their education. These include a newly designed Sixth Form Centre, built to meet the evolving needs of young people, a Science Department hosting seven laboratories, a STEM Room and Design Workshop, Food and Nutrition room, heated 25-metre indoor swimming pool with spectator's gallery, floodlit multi-use games courts, a gymnasium featuring a climbing wall, cardio, strength and conditioning suites and floodlit multi-games courts. Our valued and esteemed sporting partnerships with the University of Bristol, Henleaze Performance Swimming Club and Bristol Sport afford our pupils access to world-class, off-site professional coaching and state-of-the-art-facilities.

Pastoral Support

Clifton High School prides itself on the high level of pastoral care it affords each individual pupil throughout all year groups, from the early learners entering our Hive Pre-School through to our more mature and independent students in the Sixth Form. We establish the foundations of care with a collaborative dedication that tailors support and guidance on an emotional, social and academic level for the individual needs of each pupil. Children can trust that they are seen, heard and understood as we administer pillars of pastoral care that encourages self-esteem and confidence in recognising individual brilliance. A 1:10 staff to pupil ratio is consistent throughout our Senior School allowing for a high level of support both personally and academically. Health and Wellbeing lessons are always a highlight in the timetable, allowing pupils to learn vital life skills and explore topics to help them navigate their personal and social lives. Additionally, our pupils have access to regular contact with our Mental Wellbeing Lead, and onsite Councillor in our newly refurbished Wellbeing Hub.

Pupils' Outcomes

Clifton High School has produced a long line of thriving pupils who have excelled at the School and many leave to attend a variety of universities and further education colleges to study a wide range of both academic and creative subjects.

We are proud of all pupils as they continue to discover their roles in the wider world, retaining our values of Curiosity, Empathy, Love and Direction to make a positive contribution on society.
