Mayville has been at the heart of Southsea for over 125 years and, to this day, we continue to follow our founding philosophy of educating the 'whole child' - 'The head, the hand and the heart'. Our ethos serves to instil a life-long love of learning in every pupil; we believe it is the happy child who learns and, as such, all pupils are valued for who they are and are supported to develop a sense of self-respect. This enables them to approach their academic studies with a positive attitude and encourages them to flourish within the broader community of the school.

We are a split site: the school has four large teaching sites and our playing fields are at Cockleshell, Eastney, which is less than a 10 minute journey from the School. We offer a strong Gifted & Talented Programme, along with a renowned Learning Support Unit, where our specialist teachers help pupils with a wide range of special educational needs. With the support of our highly experienced teaching and therapeutic staff, pupils are able to overcome their barriers and develop the skills and confidence they need to take the next steps in their lives.

Throughout our Nursery, Junior and Senior schools, studies and activities are inclusive and structured to meet the needs, challenge the expectations and exceed the goals of each individual. Founded in 1897, there is a strong emphasis on traditional disciplines, yet Mayville adopts innovative teaching methods to help promote learning. Small teaching groups, enhanced by cutting-edge technology and modern facilities, make for a stimulating and highly enjoyable learning environment, where everyone can thrive. Our philosophy ensures that, wherever the pupils' strengths lie, they are nurtured and developed to the best of their ability.

Mayville is characterised by an incredibly strong sense of community and our pupils show compassion, empathy and respect to their peers. We offer wraparound care and a holiday club that runs for 50 weeks a year, along with a wide range of after-school extracurricular clubs and activities. Mayville children are well looked-after, in a safe, caring and supportive environment. Every child at Mayville is given the space to identify, develop and achieve their own unique potential.

Our very youngest children are integrated into the broader life of the school from the outset - benefiting from shared facilities and specialist teaching, along with all-school assemblies and other events throughout the year. This continuity helps to ensure a smooth transition into the next stage of their educational journey. To ensure that we provide a bespoke education to each child within the senior school, we split the forms into two so that the pupils are taught in sets of around 12. This is an unparalleled staff-pupil ratio in senior school education. Pupils in the Senior School are set end-of-year examinations each Summer. They also take standardised, baseline (CAT) tests in Year 7 (Remove) and Year 9 (Upper 4) to allow us to assess their potential and progress.

Throughout their time at school, Mayville children benefit from an excellent PSHE programme that introduces them to wider social issues and equips them with essential life skills. In the Senior School, pupils receive expert guidance on future pathways from our dedicated Careers Coordinator.

Typically, our pupils come from a wide catchment area, which extends to Winchester, Hambledon, Chichester and Isle of Wight, as well as Fareham and the surrounding areas. Of course, we have a very large number of Portsmouth and Southsea families as well. The journey to school is facilitated by travel in one of our minibuses. We offer pick-ups on the following routes; Petersfield, Chichester, Fareham, Whiteley, Horndean, Hayling Island (the Hayling Ferry), Gosport Ferry, the Hovercraft and the Harbour Station; our minibus brochure can be found on our website.

We also have pupils who travel back and forth to the Isle of Wight each day. From the Hovercraft in Ryde to Mayville, the journey takes twenty minutes. Once pupils arrive in Southsea on the Hovercraft, our minibuses are there to take them to school and drop them back after school has finished.

We welcome overseas pupils who can study at Mayville, provided that they have a relative or legal guardian living in the UK with whom they reside on a permanent basis.

The class of 2024 achieved an 84% overall pass rate (national average is 67.6%). 100% of pupils passed English language at grade 4 or above. The pass rate in core subjects (English language & literature, maths, science) was 88%. Our high value-added scores continue to exceed expectations - 15% more pupils gained grade 5 and higher in English and maths, as measured against their expected outcomes.

As an inclusive school, we strive to ensure that no child is left behind and that all pupils achieve their own personal best. In 2024, the GCSE pass rate for pupils with special educational needs was 81%, with a pass rate in core subjects of 86%.
