Building strong foundations

Many schools can boast about their exceptional academic results, university success rates, extensive sporting and co-curricular programmes, welcoming atmospheres and stunning grounds and facilities. Indeed, we can do that as well.

What makes us different, however, is a combination of things: our size, a genuine focus on the needs of the individual, and the fact that we really understand our pupils across different stages and know how to get the very best out of them.

It is a potent trio. It is what enables us to get to know our students really well and to understand what makes them tick. It is why we can support them in a way that is material and motivating to them, throughout their whole school journey. It is the reason your child will strive for personal excellence and want to be the best version of themselves. It is the secret of their, and our, success.

Our mission is to provide a caring community for every pupil, which treats them as an individual, unearths and nurtures their talents, encourages them to pursue excellence in all they do, and enables them to flourish.

Our community's wellbeing is central; without it, no one will ever achieve their best. That is why wellbeing underpins everything we do. Our students thrive because they are known, understood, valued, and supported in everything they do.

Merchiston is a remarkable school where pupils make lifelong friends and community connections while gaining a world-class, global, outward-looking education.

Merchiston's pupils leave us as rounded individuals, not only having achieved the highest level of personal academic success but with a sense of who they are and with respect for others, having learnt what it means to have true integrity and character. Our success proves that what we do works.

The Forest at Merchiston – where learning happens naturally

The foundations for a Merchiston education are laid in the Forest Nursery and Forest Junior School, a co-ed provision, designed to meet the huge demand for alternative approaches and offering the very best formative early years of education.

The Forest's ground-breaking approach to education empowers children to become confident, curious, and resilient learners with broad imaginations. Our outstanding curriculum nurtures cognitive and emotional growth while fostering creativity within rigorous academic learning, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching educational experience.

Outdoor education

Outdoor education transforms the academic learning by bringing classroom lessons to life. It fosters critical thinking, enhances problem solving-skills and promotes physical wellbeing. Our cutting-edge curriculum integrates traditional learning with real-world experiences, inspiring your children to explore, discover and thrive in a natural environment, thus creating a well-rounded, engaged and resilient learner. Our innovative education encompasses enquiry-based learning, equipping your children with real skills and knowledge. This approach encourages curiosity, nurtures creativity and ensures that our children are prepared to meet the challenges of the future with confidence and competence.

Co-educational to single-sex

Following the introduction of our Forest Nursery and Junior School, Merchiston remains committed to its single-sex (all-boys) provision in the Senior School. The strength of our model is underpinned by the knowledge that boys and girls learn differently at different stages in their development; the attention to the individual being an essential pillar of our educational ethos, we strongly believe the move towards single-sex in the middle years allows us to offer a more tailored approach to education and care.

Likewise, we believe it is important for our younger pupils to have the chance to connect with and learn alongside girls during those formative early years of education, laying strong foundations for good relationships with the opposite sex.

If your daughter joins us in the Nursery or Junior School, we will then support her transition to the Senior School of your choice. At Senior School level, Merchiston continues to benefit from its strong links with girls' schools for drama performances, cultural events and social gatherings.
