Choosing a school for your child at the age of four is an important decision providing a significant first opportunity to inspire a little learner and prepare them for the next stage of their education. At Merlin we specialise in these precious early years. The Merlin, established in 1986, is a creative and nurturing co-educational pre-prep which does not assess on entry and instils in its children a natural love and excitement for learning. Merlin children do extremely well in gaining entry, at 7+ or 8+, to the top schools in London and further afield, and they move on confident, kind, and excited for their next step in education.

You will find us in the heart of Putney, in a beautiful Victorian house. We offer a warm and homely atmosphere where all staff take time to engage with our children, supporting the development of their independence and confidence. There is a vibrant buzz about the school, where the children thrive as part of a caring community. Corridors and classrooms teem with life and practical activities enhance learning and stimulate pupils' imagination.

Our school motto is 'have a go', and we aim to evoke a thirst for learning, encouraging curiosity in the world around us. Whilst maths and English underpin our syllabus, we pride ourselves on the depth and breadth of our curriculum. We believe in the importance of delivering a wide range of subjects and experiences, providing children with crucial and exciting opportunities and encouraging a love of learning. Our individualised approach to teaching and learning enables all children to make excellent progress. Children's learning is further enhanced by our small class sizes and high adult to child ratio, with our unique approach to teaching English and maths creating even smaller teaching groups in these subjects. Our teachers are passionate and inspiring, and our school environment and curriculum capture the children's imagination, firing their enthusiasm, and inspiring them to want to learn.

Over half of our timetable is taught by specialist teachers including science, drama, music, computing, French and PE/games. Pupils relish the challenge of their first formal sports lessons, learning about teamwork and sportsmanship alongside the specific skills, gearing them up to find their own sporting pathway. Our children bounce into science lessons wondering what practical activity awaits, they master the skills of thinking and creating in computing lessons and build confidence through giving presentations and taking part in assemblies and innovative drama productions.

At the end of their school journey with us, we send our children off to their next schools with the confidence to build new relationships and the enthusiasm to learn, instilled with a positive attitude towards new challenges. Despite being a non-selective school, the curriculum is ambitious for all, and Merlin children make excellent progress from their individual starting points, moving on to on to a range of prestigious schools. Please do book on to one of our school tours, via our website, to see for yourself - we look forward to welcoming you.
